I know it doesn’t look all that different, but the new website is up! We’ve migrated to a new host and should have fewer stability issues and downtime, hopefully. A few other updates as we move forward:

DM Toolkit Data still unavailable

So apparently there are nearly 2GB of DM Toolkit uploads. I didn’t realize our database has grown to such a massive size, and transporting it to the new host has proved to be logistically difficult. I wasn’t able to get it done together with the rest of the site, and so it will probably be another week before online backups are working again.

BGGCon

We will be at booth 405 at BGGCon this week and weekend. Come by and play BattleCON with us if you get the chance! We’ll have some special promos of Ernie the Geek (the BGG Mascot) as a playable character, and you can score one by dropping by our booth and chatting for a bit, or playing one of our games (how about the new Minigame Library? It’ll be there too!)

Minigame Library

Is September already a third over? It feels like time has been slipping away as we work on the Minigame Library tirelessly. The complete library is in the hands of the printers, and should be ready in time for BGGCon (at least, advance copies will be there, if nothing else).

Here’s a little preview of what the complete set may look like (this is an artist’s rendering from the proofs):

App Updates

With the Minigame Library all ready for press, we’re back to our regularly scheduled program of working on apps. Expect updates to DM Toolkit, BattleCON on iOS, and Cartographer this month, if all goes according to plan. We’re also working on setting a launch date for Chunky Fighters and the MAID RPG app. More info on these will be posted as they develop!

BattleCON: Devastation of Indines

Devastation of Indines is progressing steadily along. We finally have art for the complete roster, and will be revealing it piece by piece on facebook and here on Level 99 Games. We’re planning to launch a Kickstarter project for it in December, so look forward to more information then, and start planning ahead if you want to grab a create-your-own-character reward this time around!

New RPGS in the works!

I can announce that we’re working undercover on two new role-playing games for you storytelling enthusiasts out there. We are hoping to release new details on these next month, so check back around the same time then for a more more fleshed out announcement with some graphics and logos! I can tell you in advance that one of these games will be related to Mystic Empyrean (a stand-alone that you can tie-in to an existing campaign or play by itself), while the other will be something completely new!

Resources are the basic building blocks of a DM Toolkit campaign, and as such, are probably the first thing you’ll want to create.

0. Understanding Resources and Templates

Resources

A resource may be a character, a trap, a spell, an organization, or anything else that is a proper noun. Prince Jans, Twilight Castle, and The Bloodthirsty Sword of Sheer Evil are all examples of resources.

Templates


Every resource is based on a pattern called a template. A template is a common noun, describing a class of things. Specialist NPC, Location, and Magic Sword are all templates.

To understand the relationship between templates and resources better, take the example of the Bloodthirsty Sword of Sheer Evil. The sword has magical properties and stats that make it unique, like a boost to attack power or a curse that makes the owner fly into a bloody rage. The template the sword is derived from is a blank slate–it knows the sword has attack power and some property, but those are just blanks to be filled in. The template is the ‘character sheet’ for the resource, as it were. Continue reading »
