Hepzibah Culotre

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Human / Female / Gesselheim
  • Style: Gambler - Use powerful stats and effects, but beware—mistakes may be deadly.
  • UA: Dark Pact - Exchange your own life for incredible power. 

Hepzibah is one of the most dangerous fighters in War, both to herself and to others. Her Dark Pact ability exacerbates the exchange on all of her trades, meaning that if she lands a hit, she’ll make excellent ground, but if she misses and gets hit, she’ll suffer extreme losses.

Hepzibah’s strength is in her ability to hedge the bets she makes with her UA by backing them up with her styles. Her toolkit provides excellent hit confirm and defense, as well as the ability to pump up her damage and guarantee a stun, even if she would normally miss it by a few points.

Her main weaknesses come from opponents who have ways to dodge her attacks or to break through her generally strong defenses. Since miscalculations and lost beats can be especially costly for Hepzibah, she has to be careful against opponents who have extra ways to trip her up.

 

Demitras Denigrande

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Vaum / Male / Gesselheim
  • Style: Gambler - Use powerful stats and effects, but beware—mistakes may be deadly.
  • UA: Crescendo - Wear the opponent down with light strikes, then land a massive killing blow.

Demitras is the quickest fighter in BattleCON, with a kit of priorities that range from +1 to +3, and a Unique Ability that provides even more speed. With the priority control to regularly beat a dash, Demitras must think carefully about how and when he will land the few critical hits he needs to secure a match.

Demitras Unique Ability banks his low-damage hits as Crescendo Tokens. These can be converted back into power during ante to allow him to make a critical hit for 7+ damage. It only takes a few of these big hits to seal a match for Demitras, but missing one can be exceptionally dangerous, so he must be very careful about how he chooses to leverage his tokens and when to spend them or use their speed to gain more power.

Demitras is great at striking opponents and avoiding retaliation, but his short ranges and use of movement to dodge mean that he is susceptible to opponents who can reliably hit at range while ignoring his stuns, such as Hepzibah and Cadenza.

 

Heketch

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Rasp / Male / The Planes
  • Style: Specialist - Capitalize on special effects and technical bonuses.
  • UA: Dark Force - Teleport directly to opponents, or press the attack for bonus damage

Heketch is a melee specialist fighter who ducks in and out of combat to replenish his dark force token. Of course, if your opponent tries to get away from your assault, they do the job for you. This creates a tricky situation where being close to Heketch is the most dangerous place to be, but also the only reasonable place to be. His unique base, Knives, is one of the most powerful and useful in the game, thanks to its speed and sheer damage output.

Heketch can prove exceptionally difficult for rangers and tacticians to deal with, due to his high mobility and fast attacks. Dark Force lets him jump across the board at a moment’s notice, and while using its ante can hurt his damage capability, it can upset the tempo of zoner-type characters so much they are unable to deal with the rest of your attack string.

Heketch’s more difficult matches are against the heavyweight fighters that can outpace his damage and avoid getting stunned by his attacks. Characters like Vanaah that can be hyper-competent in melee can pose a problem as well, and anyone with the mobility control to constantly keep him at range 2 can do serious damage while his Knives are on cooldown.

 

Vanaah Kalmor

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Human / Female / Sanghalim
  • Style: All-Rounder - Take advantage of the opponent’s weakness and use superior stats.
  • UA: Divine Rush - Make a power attack with increased speed and damage.

Vanaah is an exceptionally strong close to mid-range fighter whose battle scythe gives her dominance at ranges 2 and 3. While her preferred ranges are in the middle of the board, she’s also exceptionally competent at range 1, and her Divine Rush ability lets her make aggressive power attacks that can quickly cut down foes.

Vanaah’s kit provides a decent number of tricks and anti-escapes. She has two excellent styles, Glorious and Vengeance, which require a little bit of prediction but which can both turn the tide of battle quickly when combined with her Divine Rush. With generally good defenses, excellent hit confirm, and above-the-curve power, Vanaah can control the middle of the board and quickly dispatch foes.

Vanaah’s main weakness is against other melee specialists like Seth and Luc, who have ways to throw off her predictions or out-speed her attacks, which can reach only a moderate top speed.

 

Lixis Ran Kanda

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Dryad / Female / Sanghalim
  • Style: Gambler - Use powerful stats and effects, but beware—mistakes may be deadly.
  • UA: Withering Touch - Cut down your opponent’s options as you hit them.

Lixis is a tempo and attrition character whose typical game plan is to land a few trades just to cut down her opponent’s options, then strike with a few high-impact attacks while her opponent is disabled. If she can establish a dominant position early, her Withering Touch will keep opponents on the defensive for a long time.

With the excellent hit confirm on styles like Vine, Venomous, and Naturalizing, as well as the anti-dash tool her Lance provides, Lixis can quickly back opponents into a corner and keep them there for a continuous string of attacks, ending with a high-power Pruning attack to cash in on her setup. Once the opponent is down a few bases, it can become quite easy to predict their viable moves, allowing Lixis to use normally dangerous attacks without fear of retaliation. Her Naturalizing style is especially interesting in many matchups, because it enables you to cut off all status boosts. This can be especially devastating to characters like Rukyuk, Magdelina, and Kallistar who rely heavily on their stat buffs.

Lixis can have some trouble dealing with fast and mobile characters, who will be able to escape her pins without the same difficulty that other fighters might have. Judicious use of her Lance, and using Pruning as a trading tool rather than a damage-dealer can help to turn these matches in her favor.

 

Rukyuk Amberdeen

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Elvan / Male / Willat
  • Style: Zoner - Control spacing to dominate the pacing of the game.
  • UA: Custom Ammunition - Use specialized Ammo to take out foes, but beware of running out!

Rukyuk is a ranged attacker with a Unique Ability that is both a boon and a drawback. His Custom Ammunition allows him to deal with just about any situation, but he must reload often in order to get back the ammo he has spent, and reloading gives your opponent an opening to attack.

Rukyuk’s strengths lie in his versatility, range, and mobility. He’s able to hit hardest and fastest where most opponents aren’t able to hit at all, making even his dash and movement effects threatening. In melee, he isn’t entirely out of options, as anything paired with point blank, or a Trick Drive with his Impact Shell can reset a more favorable position for the next beat.

Rukyuk can have difficulty dealing with characters who have enough mobility to overcome his range, such as Heketch and Demitras, as well as those who have specifically-designed anti-range tools like Cadenza and Khadath. By using his movement tools preemptively against these foes, he can reset his position and then strike while their best attacks are on cooldown.

Hikaru Sorayama

  • Race / Gender / Nationality: Half Elemental (Light) / Male / Relecour
  • Style: All-Rounder - Take advantage of the opponent’s weakness and use superior stats.
  • UA: Geomancy - Infuse your attacks with the elements of Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth!

Hikaru is one of the best characters to start out with in BattleCON. He has great stats with above average speed and power, and the ability to use his Geomancy to boost any sub-par stat or to push an above-average stat even higher. Packing a set of styles with speed, mobility, defense, and a little bit of control, Hikaru has everything you need to take on just about any opponent out there.

Hikaru’s greatest strength is his versatility. Both his styles and his Geomancy ability combine to give him a huge array of options, so that he can deal with just about any situation he finds himself in. This allows Hikaru players to take the best option they see, without worrying much about long term set-ups or trying to play around the opponent’s best attacks.

Hikaru’s most difficult matches are against technical characters with hard counters, such as the ability to dodge at specific ranges or to lock down his movement. Lacking any good range options, Hikaru can get into bad situations against characters like Khadath and Rukyuk who excel at keeping their opponents out of melee.

If you haven’t heard of Hearthstone yet, I encourage you to give it a look. This online collectible card game from the makers of World of Warcraft does a lot of things right, and holds some excellent lessons for game designers.

Like zen, good game design is impossible to teach. It has to be experienced. I can tell you all about the great things in Hearthstone, but until you experience it for yourself, it won’t truly register. If you haven’t played Hearthstone yet, go try the tutorial, and maybe even put in a few dollars to see what opening packs or playing in the PvE segments is like.

Here are a few lessons about good game design that I learned from playing Hearthstone. See if you agree, and see if you’ve learned anything different. Keep in mind that these are lessons on design. Things like “have a good tutorial” and “balance the game thoroughly” are lessons in execution, not design, so I won’t be mentioning those here, though Hearthstone holds a wealth of lessons in good execution as well.
